Before building a dashboard, define the decision
Good dashboards begin with business questions—not charts.
A dashboard becomes useful when every metric supports a decision. Before selecting charts, identify who will use the dashboard, what they need to know, and what action should follow.
Define each metric carefully, confirm its source, and agree on refresh frequency. This prevents different departments from using different definitions for the same number.
The final design should make important changes, risks, and exceptions easy to notice while keeping secondary information available through filters or detail pages.
